PDF Viewer

The PDF viewer provides the ability to view the PDF for the associated reference. The PDF viewer provides the ability to automatically have keywords highlighted, as well as, having the ability to manually highlight text and add comments within the PDF.

A PDF viewer is included on the Right hand side of the Synthesis Main Window. This PDF viewer displays highlighted keywords from both the Synthesis Main Window Search Filter (Searching in Synthesis), as well as, the Highlight FullText Keywords found in the Project Information tab (Project Information Tab) amd Project Settings window (Project Settings).

The PDF viewer can also be used for identifying Bookmarks (i.e. Section Headings) identified in the PDF, keywords, and highlighting text and adding comments. All of these features can most likely be found in other External PDF viewers which can be launched from the Paper Tab (Paper Tab) in the Synthesis Main Window.

  1. PDF Bookmarks: To display the Bookmarks in the PDF (note: Bookmarks are assigned by the Publisher and may vary from journal to journal), go to the "Show/hide utility pane" icon in the upper left hand corner of the PDF viewer. This will then display the Utiliy Pane. Select the Bookmarks tab. This will then display all the bookmarks in the PDF.

  2. PDF Keywords: To display the Keywords in the PDF (note: Keywords are configured in the "Hightlight Fulltext Keywords" text area in the Project settings), go to the "Show/hide utility pane" icon in the upper left hand corner of the PDF viewer. This will then display the Utiliy Pane. Select the Keywords tab. This will then display all the pages and locations where the keywords are located.

  3. PDF Highlighting and Comments: The PDF Viewer also has the ability to highlight text and add comments. This functionality can be found on the upper Right hand corner of the PDF Viewer. Note: Your changes to the PDF will need to be saved by clicking the Save icon on the Left hand side of the PDF Viewer.

  4. Highlighted text and comments can then be extracted from the PDF by using the "Import Highlighted Text" on the Paper tab.

Note: The Synthesis PDF Viewer may be limited on smaller screens with limited resolution. In this case, it is recommended that the "Launch External Viewer" in the Paper tab be used.
