PDFs of the references can be imported indivudally at any time. However, after
applying the Inclusion/Exclusion criteria to the references, PDFs can be imported
automatically in bulk.
There are several ways that PDFs can be downloaded or imported into Synthesis. The
most common method is to download the individual PDF. A second approach is to
download the PDFs in bulk, in which any Included references, will be downloaded. The
final approach is to "Import from File" for PDFs that you already have.
Individual PDFs can be downloaded by clicking on the reference that you want to
download and then going to the Paper Tab.
In the Paper Tab there is a a "Download" button. Clicking this button
will attempt to automatically download the PDF.
A status indicator will be displayed between the Tabs section and the
Reference Table in the Synthesis Main Window. This status indicator will
inform you as Synthesis attempts to download the PDF and if it was
located at the end of the process.
Once a PDF has been downloaded, it will be displayed in the PDF viewer
(i.e. right hand side of the Synthesis Main Window) and be marked as
"Yes" in the PDF column in the Reference Table.
Bulk PDFs (i.e. more than one PDF) can be downloaded by clicking the "Download
All" button in the Synthesis Main Window. Synthesis will then attempt to
download any "Included" references.
As the PDFs are being downloaded a status indicator will be displayed
between the Tabs section and the Reference Table in the Synthesis Main
Window. This status indicator will inform you as Synthesis attempts to
download the PDFs and a counter of PDFs attempting to be downloaded and
the number of successful downloads.
Once a PDF has been downloaded, it will be displayed in the PDF viewer
(i.e. right hand side of the Synthesis Main Window) and be marked as
"Yes" in the PDF column in the Reference Table.
In the event that a PDF cannot be automatically downloaded, the PDF can be
imported by clicking the "Import from File" button in the Paper Tab.
Synthesis helps trying to find associated papers by proving a "Find on
Web" button in the Paper Tab, that will then try to find the associated
webpage that may contain the PDF. The Find on Web feature first looks
for the DOI (Document Indentifer Object) which is a publisher assigned
URL for the references webpage, and if there is no DOI, then Synthesis
provides a Google Scholar search using the title of the reference.
